Winter changes to spring

Today we read In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb by Marion Dane Bauer.  Afterwards we compared and contrasted winter and spring and wrote our ideas in a Double Bubble Map.

Little Peeps!

Today our 5th grade buddies visited!  We did an experiment with marshmallow peeps.  Which solution would dissolve the peep best?  Lime juice, hot water, cold water, soda, or vinegar?  We made predictions.

We came up with a hypothesis, observed the results, and formed a conclusion.

We learned that hot water dissolves marshmallow peeps best.

Announcements

Friday, March 20 is class picture day.  Our picture time is 9:10, so please be sure to have kids here on time.  Be sure to send in your picture order if you want to purchase pictures.

Thank you to the Prisco family for donating 7 more exercise balls to the classroom!

Be sure to read with your child for at least 20 minutes every night.  This time can be spent with them reading their take-home book to you or you reading out loud to them.  Remember to leave feedback in the take-home reading log so I can be sure their book is challenging, but not frustrating.

Pie Day!

The kids enjoyed the opportunity to taste different kinds of pies.  It was difficult, but they selected their favorite, and we created a graph with the data.  We taste-tested Apple, cherry, chocolate pudding, and cookies and cream pies.  Cookies and cream was the big winner!  Thank you to the families that brought pies in for our special day!

Oobleck!

Today was another incredible day in kindergarten!  We read Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss.  After reading the book, we made a Multi-Flow Map which helps us understand cause and effect.

After specials, our 5th grade buddies came in and kindergarteners were given a Baggie with Oobleck in it!  It was interesting to see that Oobleck can be made into a ball, but if it sits in your hand, it melts!  To make Oobleck, mix food coloring with 1 cup of water, then add 1-1/4 cups of corn starch.  It does not mix as easily as sugar and water, but it will mix.

Pi Day Celebration

A week from today is Pi (3.14...) day.  I thought it might be fun to celebrate by letting the kids taste different kinds of pie on Friday.  They can talk about their favorite and we can graph the results.  Would anyone be willing to bring in a pie for this event?  Apple?  Cherry?  Chocolate? Meringue?  (Just a few ideas).  Please reply to this post if you can bring in a pie and include the type of pie you plan to bring.

Thank you!

Today's news

Just a few items:

Fire drill
This afternoon, the school had a fire drill.  The kids did a great job!

Late start
This Wednesday, March 4 is a late start day.  School will start at 11:30 and will dismiss at 3:40.

Extra Clothes
The kids will go outside for recess even when it is chilly and there is snow on the ground.  Many of them enjoy playing in the snow.  Please help them dress appropriately for recess.  You might even consider sending an extra pair of jeans with your child, just in case their pants get wet at recess.

Dr. Seuss's Birthday!
This week we are celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday!  Today we read The Cat in the Hat and wrote about how we would like the Cat in the Hat to come to our houses.  We also read There's a Wocket In My Pocket and made Bridge Maps that help us see rhyming words.
