Wonderful Wednesday

Please remember that there is no school on Friday.  Stay safe in the snow and we will meet again on Monday.

Today we did some terrific work with Thinking Maps.  First, we did a Circle Map about teeth.  This Map includes everything we know about teeth.

After lunch, we did a Bubble Map that describes the baby bird in Are You My Mother? By P.D. Eastman.

As if the day weren't exciting enough, we also met with our 5th grade buddies!  What a day!

Weekly Update

The kids had a great day at school today!  Here is some important news to be aware of:

Lockdown Drill
Towards the end of the day, the school had a Lockdown Drill.  Students are asked to be in a secure location and remain silent.  This is difficult for the kids to do, but they did a wonderful job!

Dates
There will be no school next Friday, February 27.
Wednesday, March 4 is a Late Start day.  School will start at 11:30 and dismiss at 3:40.

Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to a successful Valentine's Day party last week.

Thank you to Mrs. Besson for donating funds to purchase 5 more balls for the classroom!

I enjoyed meeting with families during conferences.  Thank you for taking time to meet with me.

Presidents
We talked about Presidents this week.  Today we read Duck for President and then created a Bubble Map describing Duck and things he did in the story.

What a Wonderful Day!

Today our fifth grade buddies came by to help us with a science experiment.  We wondered if Valentine candy would dissolve more quickly in hot water or cold water.  We tested this with Hershey's kisses and Brach's conversation hearts.  We learned that candy dissolves more quickly in hot water.  Amazing discovery!

Sight Word Practice

There is a new way to practice sight words at home!  I entered the sight words by month into Vocabulary Spelling City.  This can be accessed by downloading the app to any tablet.  It can also be accessed by going to www.spellingcity.com/legacy kindergarten/.

From the website you will need to sign up for a free membership.  You can select which month's sight words you would like to work on.  Above the list are several buttons.  Click Play a Game.  There are a number of activities you can access.  I would recommend Audio Word Match and Read A Word, but you are welcome to find a game to fit your child's interest.

From the app, you will see several sample lists on the left and the list of games on the right.  Our words are not in the sample list area.  Under the 2 menus is a red button that says More Lists.  Click that button.  Select username and type in legacykindergarten (no space).  This will take you to the sight word lists.

I welcome your feedback on the app and website.  Please let me know if it is useful and helpful.

Enjoy!

Conferences

I will be holding parent-teacher conferences this week.  I sent notices home with the kids on Friday.  I look forward to meeting with everybody this week!  If you need to reschedule, please send me an email and we can reschedule.

Thank you!

Classroom News

I apologize for being late with this.  I'm still getting up to speed.

Our Student Council is sponsoring a fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation.  You received information and a collection box for this yesterday.  This is a wonderful organization and it's  a great way to support student leadership at Legacy!  The class that donates the most money earns a pizza party.

Wednesday, February 4
This is a late start day.   School will begin at 11:30 and dismiss at 3:40.

Friday, February 13
We will have our Valentine's Day party during our center time.  If you would like to come in and volunteer for the party, please let me know.  For the party, we will need plain heart shaped cookies to frost, pink and red frosting, and sprinkles to decorate cookies.  I would also like some inexpensive paper plates (the kind with the ridges on the edges) for Valentine's hats.  If you can bring any of these items in, please let me know.  Thank you!

Monday, February 16
There is no school on this day because it is President's Day.

Friday, February 20
Students will be at school ALL DAY because they did not come to school on Monday.

Friday, February 27
This is a no-student contact day

Super Reading

Over the last month, the class read several books and created Thinking Maps to demonstrate their thinking about the books.  I invite you to talk to your children about the books and the Thinking Maps they helped create.
